May Matariki Kite

Happy  Matariki New Year to everyone for tomorrow!

Matariki day is a day Maori remember the people that have passed away even in the past.

We have been learning to weave a kite.

How to make a kite

You need a brown paper bag

Cut the back and the front

Do a Maori design on one off them

Paint the one with the design on it in only three colours – black, red and white  and the other half you paint in one of five colours which are purple, yellow, green, orange and blue.

After you cut them into eight strips nearly to the top

Then you are ready to weave.

Weave the stripst over and under then you tie a string on the bag handle

And now you are finished .

I enjoyed making my beautiful kite.

My Matariki Star

Yesterday I designed and created a star during Cybersmart using the diamond shape which I had to duplicate over and over. I had to push them together and sometimes rotate them to make them fit into a star. In the end I used the colour gradient to add colour to my star and finally a background. It was really good fun.

Torty, the lucky tortoise

Our class read a story about a lucky tortoise named Torty. The story happened during the First World War that lasted four years from 1914-1918. A New Zealand soldier named Stewart rescued Torty who got run over by a gun carriage. Stewart and Torty became good friends. When the WAR ended Stewart came back to NZ to his family with Torty. Later, Stewart died.Torty lived with Beth, Stewart’s daughter.  One day Torty got stolen and sold to a circus. Beth called the police and she  got Torty back. Torty was lucky because she was saved and had many adventures. She is now over 200 years old.
